CCRS Practical Assessment: “The Master Signage Project”
This practical assessment is the second half of the Certified CNC Router Specialist (CCRS) qualification. Since students are using their own machines, the focus is on demonstrating safe, precise, and professional workflows through documented evidence.
Project Goal: Create a multi-layered or V-carved sign (min. 300mm x 300mm) that incorporates at least two different toolpaths (e.g., a Pocket and a Profile cut).
Submission Requirements:
- A Technical Write-up: A document detailing your settings.
- Photos: Clear images of the setup and the final result.
- Video Clips: Short clips (15–30 seconds) of critical safety and operational steps.
Task 1: CAD/CAM Setup (Design & Toolpathing)
Requirement: Submit screenshots of your software workspace (CorelDRAW, Aspire, or Fusion 360).
- Vector Cleanup: Show that your design has closed vectors and no overlapping lines.
- Toolpath Parameters: Show your “Tool Database” settings for the bit you chose. You must justify your Feed Rate and Spindle Speed (RPM) based on the material used.
Task 2: Machine Preparation (Video Submission)
Requirement: Record a short video (max 60 seconds) demonstrating the following:
- The “Snap-in” Rule: Show yourself snapping the collet into the nut before inserting the toolbit and tightening it into the spindle.
- Material Securing: Show your workholding method. If using a Vacuum Table, show the valve configuration; if using clamps, show that they are clear of the toolpath.
- Spoilboard Check: Briefly show that a spoilboard is in place to protect your machine bed.
Task 3: Calibration & Zeroing (Video Submission)
Requirement: Record the “Zeroing” process.
- X & Y Origin: Show how you set the starting corner of your project.
- Z-Axis Zeroing: Show yourself using a touch plate or the “paper method” to set the Z-zero on the top surface of the material.
- Safety Check: Point to your Emergency Stop button and confirm you are wearing your Eye/Ear Protection.
Task 4: The Cut & Final Inspection (Photo/Video Submission)
Requirement: Document the machining process and the result.
- Action Clip: Record 20 seconds of the machine cutting. The sound should be “healthy” (no high-pitched screaming or heavy vibration).
- The “Reveal”: A photo of the part immediately after the cut, before you remove it from the bed, showing that the vacuum/clamps held it perfectly.
- Final Product: High-resolution photos of the finished, sanded piece.
Practical Evaluation Rubric (Total: 50 Marks)
Instructions for Submission:
- Compress all writups, photos and videos into a single ZIP folder or upload them to a provided Cloud Link.
- Label your files clearly: FirstName_LastName_Practical_Task1.jpg.
- Ensure the audio in your videos is clear enough to hear the spindle motor and the cutting action.
Submit: via email to the instructor at info@ambitious.co.za or use the Academy portal.
