Course Overview
INTRODUCTION TO ICC PROFILES AND COLOR CALIBRATION

–
This comprehensive training course is designed to transform print shop operators and pre-press technicians into proficient Color Management Experts.
–
Creating custom International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles is the gold-standard process behind flawless color replication, reducing ink waste, and hitting precise corporate brand colors on your am.co.za printing hardware.
–
You will gain a deep, technical understanding of the entire color calibration pipeline, from initial machine nozzles tests and single-ink limit caps to linearization curves, multi-channel mixed ink coverage, and profile execution inside the InkRIP Color Manager software.
–
What You’ll Learn
The curriculum is structured into key, targeted modules:
- Color Foundations & Hardware: Understanding color spaces, managing the “Trinity” (Printer, Ink, and Paper variables), and setting up your Spectrophotometer hardware (such as the X-Rite i1Pro 3).
- Machine Preparation & Setup: Running essential pre-flight quality checks, nozzle clears, and connecting control software to ensure the hardware is physically ready for calibration.
- InkRIP Software Mastery: Initializing the InkRIP Color Manager, setting native printing resolutions (DPI), choosing calibration parameters.
- Ink Limit Calibration (Single Ink Interception): Printing and scanning single-channel ink charts to automatically isolate the “peak ink saturation point” before pooling or bleeding occurs on vinyl or DTF films.
- Linearization Calibration: Mastering row-by-row spectrophotometer scanning techniques (deciphering green-light success vs. red-light errors) to generate smooth grayscale curves and flawless gradient transitions.
- Mixed Ink Mastery & Generation: Calculating multi-color black limits (Two Mix, Three Mix, Four Mix) to prevent green or muddy shadows, generating the final .icc file, and exporting it safely to the InkRIP system directory.
- Bonus – Advanced Quality Control: Utilizing standalone color sensors (such as Nix Color Sensors) to sample real-world physical assets and run high-accuracy brand color chasing.
–
Prerequisites
- InkRIP Software: In order to follow along with this course, you would need to own a registered version of the InkRIP software.
- Calibration Equipment & Materials: Access to a functional printing machine (e.g., am.co.za FastCOLOUR or DTF printers), compatible ink, a supported Spectrophotometer, and your choice of print media (Vinyl or PET Film) is required to complete the practical assessments.
- Software & Computer Literacy: Comfort navigating Windows operating systems, managing system directories, and a basic operational understanding of raster image processors (RIP software) are essential.
